Christmas Bubbles
5 different glasses of bubbles were tasted in our informal sparkling wine Tasting Session.
This was a stand-up tasting, which is less formal than our usual tutored tastings.
Generous tasting samples of each wine, a short talk about production and style, followed by the opportunity to discuss each wine with your friends and fellow tasters made it great fun for all.
The five sparkling wines tried were:
- Cava, presented by Tasting Sessions
- Prosecco, presented by The Good Wine Shop
- Non-vintage Champagne, presented by Tasting Sessions
- Vintage "Producer" Champagne, presented by French Bubbles
- English Sparkling Rosé, presented by Meopham Valley Vineyards
At only £20, this event was a bargain! Everybody got a bit more in your glass than the usual tasting measure, seeing as it was Christmas.
Tickets sold out in advance.

Kiwi Wine Scrum @ The Old Ship, Richmond
Tuesday 7th September, 7.30pm
Wine expert Sam Lockyear, a Kiwi through-and-through, took us on a journey to decide what New Zealand does best: Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Noir.
The crowd voted and the All Blacks won. The audience chose the Pinots over the Sav Blancs.
The team line-ups were:
The All Whites, Sauvignon Blanc exclusively from Marlborough:
- Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc
- Forrest Estate Sauvignon Blanc
- Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc
- we also had the bonus wine of Matua Sauvignon Blanc
The All Blacks, Pinot Noir from around Kiwi Land:
We started with bubbles, again brough along by Sam. This allowed us to try some traditional method Kiwi sparkling wine, which was intersting for everybody.
-
Forrest Pinot Noir from Marlborough
-
Mount Difficulty Roaring Meg from Central Otago
-
Martinborough Vineyard Te Tera from Martinborough
- Sam kindly brought along a bonus bottle of John Forrest Collection Bannockburn Pinot Noir
All told people enjoyed the NINE different wines that we tried. The Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc came out as the best value choice. The audience was split between Roaring Meg, Te Tera and the Forrest Bannockburn Pinot as the best red, with people enjoying all of them.
Expect more of the same in the future!
